These designs were commissioned by Douglas Stivison, former Editor of The Living Pulpit. I was responsible for the concept, art direction, design, and photo research. For "the Word" cover, one of my favorites, I purchased parchment paper, scanned it, and colorized it; found the fonts for the black letter calligraphy and crosses; typeset, colorized, and styled the type.
Small Press magazine was a trade magazine with a big heart. I was founding art director, and I absolutely adored working on this project. I came up with the idea of hiring incredible fine artists to illustrate the covers. I gave them no direction. They could do whatever they wanted. The results continue to astonish me. A great benefit of this project was learning who the greatest wood block artists of our time are.

Your Company was a magazine that I art directed for Time Inc. The wonderful logo design was done by WBMG. I hired some great illustrators to create cover art, including Ward Sutton, Mark Ulriksen, William Duke, and Matt Mahurin. I also commissioned the great designer, typographer, and educator, Gail Anderson to create a typographic cover layout.
Fortune Small Business (FSB) was a rebranding of Your Company magazine. I did a comprehensive redesign and we did a newsstand launch. It was an exciting achievement for me, and I worked with some great people in Time Inc.

eCompany, a magazine prototype for Time Inc.
Channels magazine, owned by Norman Lear, was one of the most fun magazines I have worked on, largely due to my Editor, Merrill Brown, who gave me a lot of creative freedom. I commissioned all of the photography and attended many of the cover shoots. Quite obviously, this was a male-dominated industry. There is also a terrific cover here by the great infographic artist, Nigel Holmes, and another great cover illustration by Robert Risko. We were nominated in the General Excellence category for the prestigious National Magazine Awards.
Personal Computing was the leading computer magazine of the time and had a really fine staff with lots of passion. I did a comprehensive redesign and was art director. We were nominated for General Excellence by the prestigious National Magazine Awards.
