Magazines
For sure, I do my best work when I work with someone inspiring. Editor Doug Stivison is among the most inspiring people I have ever worked with. Art Direction, design, concepts, photo research. For "the Word" cover, I scouted for and scanned then colorized the parchment paper, then I located a black letter font and cross icons font and typeset and colorized and styled the type:
Small Press magazine was a trade magazine with a big heart. I was founding art director, and I absolutely adored working on this project. I came up with the idea of hiring incredible fine artists to illustrate the covers. I gave them no direction. They could do whatever they wanted. The results continue to astonish me. A great benefit of this project was learning who the greatest wood block artists of our time are. Roll your mouse over any image to learn who the cover artist is:
Your Company was a magazine that I art directed for Time Inc. The wonderful logo design was done by WBMG. I was able to hire some great illustrators to create cover art, including Ward Sutton (You're Fired), Mark Ulriksen (Family Feuds), William Duke (How the IRS Targets You), and Matt Mahurin (The Art of Lying). I also commissioned the great designer, typographer, and educator, Gail Andserson to create a cover layout (The Big Idea Issue).
Magazine prototype for Time Inc:
Channels magazine, owned by Norman Lear, may well be one of the most fun magazines I have worked on, largely due to my Editor, Merrill Brown. I was given a lot of creative freedom, which is an Art Director's dream. I commissioned all of the photography and attended many of the cover shoots. Quite obviously, this was a male-dominated industry. There is also a terrific cover here by the great infographic artist, Nigel Holmes ('87 Field Guide). And another great cover illustration by Robert Risko (Independent Television). We were nominated in the General Excellence category for the prestigious National Magazine Awards. (There is one cover image with 3 powerful women on it that I need to locate, scan, and add to this gallery):
Personal Computing had a really fine staff with lots of passion, being the leading computer magazine of the time. I did a comprehensive redesign and was art director. We were nominated in the General Excellence category for the prestigious National Magazine Awards.
